I quattro racconti della serie Mirgorod (1835) appartengono alia produzione giovanile del grande scrittore russo Nikolaj Gogol' (1809-1852), e si apparentano dunque ai piii noti delle Veglie alia fattoria di Dikanka, dei quali, a delta dcllo stesso Gogol', costituiscono un po' la continuazione. Della raccolta, il piu famoso e certamente Taras Bul'ba, vero e proprio romanzo storico esaltante le gesta del popolo cosacco. Tuttavia, rispetto all'intreccio ancora romanticheggiante di quell'opera, piu genuinamente gogoliana sembra essere l'ispirazione degli altri racconti Vij, Proprietari d'altri tempi e, soprattutto, questo Come Ivan Ivanovic questiono con Ivan Nikiforovic, che nella caparbia ed irresistibilmente comica meschinita dei suoi protagonisti rimanda gia ai personaggi, alle situazioni, agli ambienti che incontreremo in seguito nel capolavoro piu maturo, Le anime morte.
