The misadventures of Lemuel Gulliver certainly are extraordinary. First he is shipwrecked in a strange land, and finds himself a prisoner of the tiny inhabitants of Lilliput. Then he washes up in Brobdingnag, where the people are giants of extraordinary proportions. Further exploits see him stranded with the scientists and philosophers of Laputa, and meeting a race of talking horses who rule over bestial humans. One of the finest satires in the English language, Gulliver's Travels delights in the mockery of everything from government to religion and - despite the passing of nearly three centuries - remains just as funny and relevant today. This gorgeous Macmillan Collector's Library edition of Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels features the beautiful artwork of the celebrated English illustrator Arthur Rackham, and an afterword by author and critic, Henry Hitchings. Designed to appeal to the booklover, the Macmillan Collector's Library is a series of beautiful gift editions of much loved classic titles. Macmillan Collector's Library are books to love and treasure.

Пр-во:

Lemuel Gulliver, ship's surgeon and castaway, has awoken in Lilliput, where the size of the tiny inhabitants makes their concerns and quarrels seem ridiculous. A second journey takes him to the kingdom of giants, where again his size gives him new insights into human behaviour. Then, after he is cast adrift by pirates, Gulliver visits a series of islands where learning is misdirected and immortality is only misery. Gulliver's final voyage brings him to the land of the Houyhnhnms, horses with reason, who share their domain with the brutish Yahoos. He returns to England a changed man. Swift's corrosive satire embraces all aspects of humanity. It is witty when dealing with foibles and frailty, bitterly angry when facing pride and stupidity, but compassionate and unsentimental when focused upon suffering.

Пр-во:

Jonathan Swift's entry into the world, on 30 November 1667 at Dublin, was not an easy one. Seven months before the author's birth, his father died, leaving an English wife lacking in income. As a boy, Swift was taken under the wing of a wealthy uncle, who paid for his education. He attended Trinity College in Dublin and Oxford, and was later ordained as an Anglican priest. Swift remained in England, becoming active in politics, and developed a reputation as a great satirist. His first major work, A Tale of a Tub (1704), an irreverent take on religious excess, was followed by The Battle of the Books (1704) and a 1711 pamphlet attacking the Whig government. Swift's political activities had an adverse effect on his livelihood, and in 1713, he returned to Ireland. There he produced his finest writing, including Gulliver's Travels. Presented as the work of Lemuel Gulliver, an adventurer, this unique blending of satire and parody was originally published under the title Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World (1726). The novel was followed by A Modest Proposal (1729), in which it is famously argued that the poor might do well in selling their children as food for the rich. Swift's final decade was marred by poor health; he produced little and died on 19 October 1745. Herbert Cole (1867-1930) was an English portraitist and book illustrator. Cole's illustrations for Gulliver's Travels first appeared in a 1900 edition published by J. M. Dent.

A shipwreck brings Lemuel Gulliver to Lilliput, where he finds himself in a kingdom of tiny people. This experience is later reversed when he lands among the giants of Brobdingnag. And yet more contrasts lie in store for him between the Houyhnhnms - a race of noble horses - and the savage sub-human Yahoos. Gulliver's Travels has not been out of print since its publication in 1726. Readers, 'from the cabinet council to the nursery', have enjoyed Swift's fusion of fantasy and reality on many levels. While politics and religion are prime targets for his satire, he also holds a mocking mirror to human nature in general.

'Among the six indispensable books in world literature' George Orwell In the course of his famous travels, Gulliver is captured by miniature people who wage war on each other because of religious disagreement over how to crack eggs, is sexually assaulted by giants, visits a floating island, and decides that the society of horses is better than that of his fellow man. Swift's tough, filthy and incisive satire has much to say about the state of the world today and is presented here in its unexpurgated entirety.

Пр-во:

A wickedly clever satire uses comic inversions to offer telling insights into the nature of man and society, the Penguin Classics edition of Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels is edited with an introduction and notes by Robert Demaria, Jr. Gulliver's Travels describes the four voyages of Lemuel Gulliver, a ship's surgeon. In Lilliput he discovers a world in miniature; towering over the people and their city, he is able to view their society from the viewpoint of a god. However, in Brobdingnag, a land of giants, tiny Gulliver himself comes under observation, exhibited as a curiosity at markets and fairs. In Laputa, a flying island, he encounters a society of speculators and projectors who have lost all grip on everyday reality; while they plan and calculate, their country lies in ruins. Gulliver's final voyage takes him to the land of the Houyhnhnms, gentle horses whom he quickly comes to admire - in contrast to the Yahoos, filthy bestial creatures who bear a disturbing resemblance to humans. This text, based on the first edition of 1726, reproduces all the original illustrations and includes an introduction by Robert Demaria, Jr, which discusses the ways Gulliver's Travels has been interpreted since its first publication. Jonathan Swift (1667-1745) was born in Dublin. Sent to Kilkenny Grammar School when he was six, Swift later attended Trinity College, Dublin, where he received his BA degree in 1686. He is considered the foremost prose satirist in the English language, which stemmed from his criticism of Britain's repressive colonial policies in Ireland. Among Swift's best known works is his ironic masterpiece, 'A Modest Proposal' (1729), and his novel, Gulliver's Travels (1726).

Пр-во:

An immaculate success on its publication in 1726, Gulliver's Travels has since had an odd double life as both a classic traveller's tale for children and a scathing satire of the human condition. Lemuel Gulliver's adventures in a series of fantastical lands - where he meets the tiny people of Lilliput, the giants of Brobdingnag, the excessively rational equine Houyhnhnms, the wild and brutish Yahoos, and the philosophical Laputans - leave him with a deeply pessimistic perspective on his own kind. But Swift's misanthropic vision clothes itself in such an exuberant outpouring of comic energy and creative high spirits - encompassing such wonders as a flying island, talking horses, and an early prototype of the computer - that it has entertained generations of readers of all ages, 'from the cabinet council to the nursery', as John Gay put it. Printed here in its unexpurgated entirety, Gulliver's Travels demonstrates the power and originality of Swift's satiric genius and the enduring appeal of his sense of the absurd.

HarperCollins is proud to present its incredible range of best-loved, essential classics. 'I cannot but conclude the bulk of your natives to be the most pernicious race of little odious vermin that nature ever suffered to crawl upon the surface of the earth.' Shipwrecked on the high seas, Lemuel Gulliver finds himself washed up on the strange island of Lilliput, a land inhabited by quarrelsome miniature people. On his travels he continues to meet others who force him to reflect on human behaviour - the giants of Brobdingnag, the Houyhnhnms and the Yahoos. In this scathing satire on the politics and morals of the 18th Century, Swift's condemnation of society and its institutions still resonates today.
